Rare great white shark filmed in the Mediterranean Sea
According to BBC, volunteer diver Derk Remmers captured a rare encounter with a great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea in May, calling the moment 'special'. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing BBC News.
"The shark was quite close to us [...] My fingers were shaking as I tried to turn on the camera," volunteer diver Derk Remmers told BBC.
Scientists believe that overfishing has led to this species being on the brink of extinction in the Mediterranean Sea. Experts say people should not worry, as the shark, presumably an adult male, was spotted far from the coast between Tunisia and Sicily.
Environmentalists hope that this sighting may prompt governments to create marine protected areas in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Divers working for the NGO Healthy Seas filmed the video during a dive to draw attention to the problem of so-called 'ghost nets'.
