In May, volunteer diver Derk Remmers captured a rare encounter with a great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea, calling the moment 'special'. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing BBC News.

"The shark was quite close to us [...] Actually my fingers were shaking when I tried to start the camera," he told the BBC.

Scientists believe that overfishing has led to this species being on the brink of extinction in the Mediterranean Sea.

Experts believe the shark was an adult male, and it was spotted far from shore between Tunisia and Sicily, so people should not worry.

Environmentalists hope that this encounter may prompt governments to create marine reserves in Mediterranean waters.

Divers from the NGO Healthy Seas filmed the video during a dive to draw attention to the problem of so-called 'ghost nets'.
