Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signalled surprise at US President Donald Trump's claim of a Russia-Ukraine "energy ceasefire", but said he would back it if Moscow does. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing The Guardian.

Writing on X shortly after saying such a deal was "news to me", the Ukrainian leader said he had discussed an energy ceasefire with the leaders of Canada, Finland and Nato and is awaiting details from the US.

The Ukrainian leader wrote:

"Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it's important for Russia to support it as well. We are awaiting details from the American side. From our Ukrainian side, there is always FULL support for de-escalation steps, protection of lives, and the necessary decisions to end the war and ensure lasting peace."

The statement came after Trump mentioned an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Zelenskyy's words suggest that Trump's claim was unexpected news for him.

In his message, the Ukrainian president noted that he had discussed the matter with the leaders of Canada, Finland and Nato. He also said he is awaiting concrete details from the American side.

Zelenskyy said the Ukrainian side always fully supports de-escalation steps, the protection of lives and the necessary decisions to end the war and ensure lasting peace. He stressed that it is important for Russia to support the ceasefire as well.

Thus, Ukraine has expressed its readiness to support an energy ceasefire, but the final decision will depend on Russia's position.
