Kazakhstanis' pension savings increased by 4.08 trillion tenge or 17% over the year. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

As of early July, pension savings of Kazakhstanis reached 28.09 trillion tenge. According to the UAPF, the main reason for the growth is a steady increase in the number of pension accounts.

Number of pension accounts increased

As of July 1, 18.78 million pension accounts were opened in the fund. This is 1.11 million accounts or 6.3% more compared to the same period last year. Of these, 12.80 million are individual pension accounts of depositors.

The UAPF has accounts opened for three types of pension contributions: - for mandatory pension contributions – 11.36 million accounts; - for mandatory professional pension contributions – 786.27 thousand accounts; - for voluntary pension contributions – 462.40 thousand accounts.

In addition, the UAPF has 5.97 million conditional pension accounts, which record information on mandatory pension contributions of employers.

Number of active accounts increased

Some accounts in the fund may not receive contributions regularly due to objective reasons. Therefore, in international practice, when assessing the level of participation in the funded pension system, active individual pension accounts that received at least one contribution during the year are taken into account.

In the first half of 2026, the number of such accounts increased from 7.20 million to 7.34 million, i.e. by 150.3 thousand accounts. Accordingly, the volume of pension savings on these accounts also increased. Over six months, it increased from 20.95 trillion tenge to 22.24 trillion tenge, i.e. by approximately 1.29 trillion tenge or 6.2%.

The majority of active accounts belong to citizens who are engaged in permanent labor activity and systematically pay pension contributions. Their number increased from 6.77 million to 6.93 million over six months. And the amount of savings on these accounts increased from 20.10 trillion tenge to 21.07 trillion tenge.

How much do employees contribute

According to the 2025 report, 80% of employees in Kazakhstan and 64% of self-employed individuals made pension contributions 6-12 times a year.

The average amount of contributions among employees was 43,661 tenge. This corresponds to the amount of contribution paid from income at the level of the average salary in the republic. Among self-employed individuals, this figure was 23,225 tenge. This indicates a contribution paid from income above the minimum wage but below the median wage.

Currently, for the majority of employees, pension contributions are transferred regularly. However, among self-employed individuals, the level of coverage by the pension system remains low.

According to experts, taking into account international experience, comprehensive measures are needed to involve this category in the pension system. Since the size of the basic pension is also calculated depending on the length of service, and the length of service is determined on the basis of mandatory pension contributions received by the UAPF.

Today, the number of accounts with contributions paid from the minimum wage decreased from 838.3 thousand to 652.4 thousand, i.e. by 22.2%. At the same time, the number of accounts with contributions from higher incomes is increasing.
