The Ministry of Health has issued a warning to citizens who are fond of drinking hot tea. According to the ministry, very hot tea and coffee may increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

"Scientists at the University of Oxford studied the link between the temperature of hot drinks and the frequency of their consumption and the risk of developing esophageal cancer. The study analyzed data from nearly 1 million people," the statement said.

The results showed that not only the amount of the drink consumed matters, but also its temperature. In people who prefer very hot drinks, the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus was more than 3 times higher compared with those who drink warm beverages.

"Drinking six or more cups of hot drinks per day was associated with a 71% increase in the risk of developing this type of cancer. At the same time, no significant difference was found between the consumption of tea and coffee. According to the scientists, the main role may be played by the high temperature of the liquid. Because it can damage the mucous membrane of the esophagus," specialists say.

The ministry warned that there is no need to give up your favorite hot drink. The main thing is to wait for it to cool slightly and not drink it while it is scalding hot.
