A 13-month-old girl was subjected to physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her parents before she was fatally injured by her mother, a court has heard. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing The Guardian.
Michal Stasiak, 28, and Kinga Wydrzynska, 26, appeared at Warwick crown court on Tuesday, where they pleaded not guilty to 11 counts related to the death of Isabella Stasiak.
Wydrzynska is charged with Isabella’s murder, while both parents have been charged with one count of causing or allowing the death of a child, four counts of causing or allowing serious physical harm to a child, two counts related to the sexual assault of a child, and three counts of child cruelty.
The court heard both parents were known to social services and the police.
Isabella died in hospital after sustaining a series of injuries including a fractured skull and ribs, a broken arm and a burn to her entire face, the court was told.
In her opening statement to the court on Tuesday, Annabel Darlow KC said emergency services were called to the Wydrzynska’s home in the early hours of 7 January 2025 where Isabella was found “grey and lifeless”.
Medical experts later concluded Isabella died “because she suffered injuries consistent with a forceful direct impact to her head against a hard surface”, Darlow told the court.
Darlow said Wydrzynska was the only adult present at the home when Isabella was found by police and the injuries were the “devastating culmination of systematic physical abuse”.
“The prosecution say, by the time Isabella died, there was an entrenched pattern of abuse, neglect and mistreatment of the little girl of which both parents were entirely aware,” Darlow told the court.
“Before she died, Isabella was subjected to physical and sexual abuse at the hands of both her mother and father,” Darlow added. “Neither defendant has ever provided any explanation for those injuries to their daughter.”
Jurors were told Isabella was born in December 2023 and immediately taken into the care of social services. After being placed in emergency accommodation, Isabella was looked after by foster parents for four months before she was returned to her parents in April 2024 – nine months before her death, the court was told.
Members of the jury were also told Stasiak was arrested by police for common assault after a report was made by Wydrzynska on 14 December 2024, less than a month before Isabella’s death.
Wydrzynska made repeated attempts to withdraw the report, jurors were told, however, Stasiak was placed on police bail and prohibited from living at the family home or contacting Wydrzynska.
In addition, the court was told police officers had attended the family home after a complaint was made by a neighbour in October 2024.
Officers attended the property and were only responded to when the police threatened to force entry, Darlow said. Officers spoke to the parents and saw Isabella and “did not have any immediate safeguarding concerns” following the visit, the court was told.
