Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk reached the Wimbledon semifinals by defeating Italy's Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
Kostyuk's victory came as missile attacks hit Kyiv. After the match, she strongly criticized the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to allow Russian athletes to return to international competitions.
"I think this is a very unfair decision. While Russia is waging war in Ukraine, allowing their athletes to compete is tantamount to supporting aggression," Kostyuk said.
According to Kostyuk, the IOC's decision negatively affects the morale of Ukrainian athletes. She called on the international sports community to stand up against Russia's actions in Ukraine.
In the Wimbledon semifinals, Kostyuk will face world No. 1 Iga Swiatek. This will be her first Wimbledon semifinal in her career.
Earlier, the Ukrainian tennis player also supported measures against Russian and Belarusian athletes following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
