WhatsApp is introducing one of its most anticipated features — users will be able to chat without disclosing their phone numbers to each other. Instead, they will exchange unique usernames, similar to Telegram or Instagram. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The feature will be gradually rolled out worldwide in the coming months. Starting in July, users will be able to reserve a nickname in advance, though this is optional.
Usernames can be changed or deleted at any time. After the full launch, phone numbers will no longer be displayed in private chats; interlocutors will only need to know your nickname.
However, a phone number will still be required for account registration, and users will continue to be able to block and report unwanted contacts.
WhatsApp explained that the innovation aims to enhance privacy. According to the company's head of product, Alice Newton-Rex, many users do not want to share their phone numbers, especially in large group chats or when communicating with strangers.
Earlier, Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov made harsh comments about WhatsApp. Kursiv LifeStyle reported on what the billionaire thinks about security in the app.
