An Indian Air Force AN-32 transport aircraft crashed on the territory of an airbase in Jorhat, Assam, sparking a fire, according to NDTV. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

Preliminary reports indicate the incident occurred on Saturday morning during the landing approach. The aircraft fell within the airbase perimeter, after which a fire broke out.

Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene. Rescue teams began firefighting and assessing the situation.

According to the Indian Air Force press service, five military personnel died in the crash. The IAF released the names of the deceased: Squadron Leader Prashant Singh, Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, Sergeant Jitendra Sharma, Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat, and Agniveervayu Danish Alam.

The cause of the crash has not been determined. An investigation has been launched.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also reported the incident, noting that authorities await official data from the military.

The AN-32 is widely used by the Indian Air Force for transporting cargo and personnel, including flights in challenging climatic and mountainous conditions.

The incident occurred several months after another aviation disaster in the region, when a Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam.
