Delhi police have arrested Abhijit Dipke, the founder of the youth movement Cockroach Janta Party. He was detained at his home ahead of a march with national flags, whose participants demanded the resignation of the head of India's election commission. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to NDTV, ahead of the action on October 16, police handed the activist a ban on holding a march in the Connaught Place area. They explained that the organizers had not obtained permission and that mass gatherings are restricted in the area.
"What law did I break?" Dipke asked during a conversation with police.
After his detention, he was placed under preventive arrest due to fears of a breach of public order. According to the movement's lawyer Ratna Singh, lawyers were unable to meet with the activist.
Supporters of the movement demand the resignation of election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging violations during the revision of voter lists. The new march was also intended to support two of Dipke's associates who had previously been sent to custody for five days. They came with flags to the Jantar Mantar site after authorities banned protests there.
Earlier, Kursiv wrote about protests by the "cockroach" movement after the leak of answers to entrance exams for medical universities. In July, police used batons and tear gas against participants, and the youth were supported by Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi — grandchildren of Indira Gandhi. Later, the actions spread to Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and other cities.
