Heavy rains have caused floods and landslides in India and Nepal, killing 70 people. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
In India 56 people died, in Nepal — 14. Another 11 people in Nepal are listed as missing. Authorities warn of the threat of new flash floods, Reuters reports.
Situation in India
In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, 66.5 mm of precipitation fell from September 25 to the morning of September 27, against a norm of 7.6 mm for this period. According to authorities, 46 people were injured and more than a thousand homes were damaged. Rescuers are working in flooded areas, and aid is being delivered to residents.
In India, a serious situation was recorded at 30 river monitoring stations in seven states. Water levels in the Ganges, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Narmada exceeded dangerous marks.
Situation in Nepal
In Nepal, a warning about possible flash floods is in effect in 49 of the country's 77 districts. Water levels in major rivers and their tributaries continue to rise. In four districts, power supply is completely disrupted, and in some places communication disruptions have arisen due to damage to cables and power sources. The flood also damaged the structures and supports of power transmission lines of a hydroelectric power plant on the Rahuganga River.
Avalanche
Separately, Nepal's authorities reported an avalanche near Mount Himlung Himal. It covered a base camp where workers were preparing tents for climbers. Ten people are missing; foreign climbers were not in the camp at the time of the avalanche.
