The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation plans a three-stage reconstruction of the Big Almaty Canal named after D. Kunaev. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
Currently, a project has been developed for the reconstruction of a section 15.6 kilometers long. At the beginning of this year, reconstruction of sections with a total length of 1.53 kilometers was completed. Work was carried out to line the facility with monolithic reinforced concrete.
This made it possible to improve the technical condition of the canal, reduce water losses and provide quality water to 33.3 thousand hectares of irrigated land in the region, said Arsen Zhakanbayev, Chairman of the Water Management Committee of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
In addition, documents are being prepared for the reconstruction of sections with a total length of 110 kilometers. This will allow the main water artery of the Almaty region to be completely concreted and modernized.
The third stage of work provides for the reconstruction of the head water intake unit of the Big Almaty Canal. The total length of the Big Almaty Canal named after D. Kunaev is 168 kilometers. The facility can pass up to 87 cubic meters of water per second.
Reconstruction of the canal will bring its throughput capacity to design indicators and improve water supply to irrigated lands in the Almaty region.
