The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is drafting a three-stage project to concrete more than 125 kilometres of the Big Almaty Canal. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

The head of the ministry, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, reviewed the results of reconstruction work on sections of the Big Almaty Canal named after D. Kunayev.

"It is necessary to ensure the canal is fully ready before the vegetation period of next year. There should be no problems with water supply to agricultural producers. In addition, it is necessary to complete in a timely manner the work on drafting the documents required for the reconstruction of other sections of the Big Almaty Canal," Nurzhigitov said.

This year's work

It should be noted that this year reconstruction work was completed on emergency sections of the canal with a total length of 1.53 kilometres. In order to reduce water losses and ensure quality irrigation of 33.3 thousand hectares of land, work was carried out to line the canal with monolithic reinforced concrete.

A three-stage plan

Overall, the reconstruction of the Big Almaty Canal is planned in three stages. At present, a project has been drafted for concreting a section with a length of 15.6 kilometres. In addition, documents required for the reconstruction of other sections with a total length of 110 kilometres are being drafted. In the third stage of the work, the head water intake structure of the Big Almaty Canal will be repaired.
