A camera trap in the Almaty State Nature Reserve has captured unique moments from the life of Tian Shan brown bears. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The video was published by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. The ministry said: "These unique moments allow us to look into the natural life of the brown bear, to learn about its behavior and lifestyle in the wild."
Tian Shan brown bear: a rare subspecies
The Tian Shan brown bear is a rare, isolated subspecies of the brown bear, listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan and the International Red Book.
These bears are relatively small in size: body length 1.5-2.2 m, weight 135-200 kg. However, very large individuals are also found. The main distinguishing feature is long light-colored claws on the front paws.
Diet and lifestyle
The Tian Shan brown bear is omnivorous: it feeds on grasses, rhizomes, bulbs, fruits and berries. Sometimes it catches marmots and pikas. It will not refuse carrion.
Births occur in winter in a den, usually 1-2 cubs are born.
Summer activity
In summer, the Tian Shan brown bear leads an active lifestyle. At this time, it restores strength spent during winter and begins to accumulate fat reserves. Most often, the bear goes out in search of food in the early morning and cool evening hours.
In summer, bears mainly live near rivers and lakes, in dense forests and alpine meadows. On hot days, they rest in cool, shaded places, as well as near streams and river banks.
