Colombia held a closely fought presidential runoff on Sunday between a progressive and a conservative outsider. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
Abelardo de la Espriella of the opposition Defenders of the Motherland movement, endorsed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, secured 50.2% of the vote, narrowly leading Ivan Cepeda of the ruling Historic Pact coalition, who received 49.8%. Cepeda has challenged the result, demanding a recount and filing a complaint with the electoral commission.
De la Espriella voted in Barranquilla with his family, while Cepeda appeared in Bogota with supporters. If declared winner, de la Espriella plans to shift Colombia to the right. The electoral commission is expected to decide on the recount request in the coming days.
