US President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean the "Trump Ocean" or the "Ocean of the Americas." He floated the idea on October 10 at a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee. His remarks were reported by the White House press pool. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
"I thought about the Atlantic or the Pacific. Let's call it the Trump Ocean. Or the Ocean of the Americas — something like that," the US president said.
Trump added that he would like to give the ocean a new name before the end of his presidential term. In the press pool report, his remark is described as a joking comment. As Fox News notes, he did not present an official renaming plan.
The president also raised the idea of renaming one of the major rivers, but ruled out the Hudson and the Mississippi. According to Mediaite, he decided to keep the Hudson's name out of respect for the English explorer Henry Hudson. In the case of the Mississippi, Trump cited his fondness for the state of the same name, where he won three presidential elections.
Trump has already changed geographic names before. In January 2025, he ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be called the Gulf of America in documents of US federal agencies. In August 2026, a similar decision concerned Lake Ontario: the president signed an order renaming it Lake America. The order does not determine which name Canada and international organizations should use.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the lake would keep its historical name. He recalled that it has existed for more than 400 years and comes from the language of the Wendat people. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, whose state borders the lake, also refused to use the new name.
The idea of renaming the oceans was voiced back when the August order was signed. At the time, Trump reasoned that after the gulf and the lake, the names of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans could be changed — possibly both at once.
In September, the president proposed another option: naming the Strait of Hormuz the "Strait of Trump." He asked Truth Social followers whether they supported the idea, and later published a map with the proposed name.
Earlier, Kursiv wrote that Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the Nobel Committee's decision to award the 2026 Peace Prize to human rights activist Navi Pillay. The US president said he deserved the award for his foreign policy achievements, claiming he had settled eight wars and secured the release of hostages.
