US President Donald Trump has called on Congress to enshrine daylight saving time year-round. To build support for the bill, he published the personal mobile number of Republican Senator Tom Cotton and suggested that residents of Arkansas call the politician directly. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

The Sunshine Protection Act passed the House of Representatives in July but faced resistance from some Republicans in the Senate. Trump accused Cotton of blocking the document.

"All residents of Arkansas, the state I love and where I won three times, the last time by a margin of 34 percentage points, tell Tom: do it!" he wrote.

AP journalists called the published number, but no one answered, and the voicemail box was full.

Currently, in most US states, clocks are moved forward an hour in spring and returned to standard time in autumn. If daylight saving time becomes permanent, it will stay light longer in the evening, but in winter dawn will come an hour later by the clock.

This is exactly how Cotton explained his disagreement. The senator recalled that the US had already introduced permanent daylight saving time and then repealed it because of late winter sunrises.

"Arkansans don't want their children going to school in pitch darkness, and I will always put Arkansas's interests first," he said.

Trump responded by complaining that changing the clocks creates unnecessary hassle, and that early darkness cuts into time for playing golf and tennis. In his view, permanent daylight saving time would allow people to return from work less often after sunset.

According to a 2025 AP–NORC poll, 12% of American adults supported changing the clocks twice a year, 47% opposed it, and another 40% were neutral. In 2022, the Senate had already approved the switch to permanent daylight saving time, but the bill did not pass the House of Representatives.
