Toyota has brought an unusual prototype to the roads that at first glance could be mistaken for a Corolla Cross. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
However, it has different headlights, a shortened wheelbase, no exhaust pipes, and a frame is visible under the underbody. Carscoops suggests that this is a so-called "mule" – an early test vehicle assembled on the body of an existing model.
According to the publication, the prototype may be used to test the new Multi-Pathway architecture. Toyota has already confirmed the development of a platform that will allow the production of electric vehicles, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids on a common technical base. This should simplify production and help plants change the ratio of output of different versions depending on demand.
Toyota claims that hybrid and plug-in hybrid models will consume 15% less fuel. A new family of four-cylinder engines with a displacement of 1.5 liters – naturally aspirated and turbocharged – is being prepared for them. They should replace the current 1.5 and 1.8 liter engines. The first cars on the new platform and with these powertrains are expected in 2027.
So far, Toyota is not disclosing which model will be the first to receive the architecture. Carscoops allows that it could become the basis for a fully electric "Corolla", but the prototype does not confirm the development of a production electric Corolla Cross crossover.
Earlier, Kursiv Auto reported that Toyota turned the Crown Signia into a sporty GT-S.
