Toyota Camry confidently outperformed Nissan Altima in new tests by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). According to the test results, the Camry received the highest Top Safety Pick+ rating, while the Altima could not qualify for an IIHS award. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The comparison is also relevant for Kazakhstan. At the time of publication, about 12,000 Toyota Camry of different generations and fewer than 100 Nissan Altima are listed for sale on Kolesa.kz. Thus, the Japanese sedan Toyota is about 136 times more common on the secondary market.
IIHS experts tested the vehicles in three main tests: small overlap front crash, moderate overlap front crash, and side crash.
The Camry received the highest Good rating in all disciplines. The Altima failed two tests. The sedan showed its worst result in the side crash, where experts identified an increased risk of head, neck, chest, and pelvis injuries for the driver.
Electronics also failed. Problems were also found in active safety systems.
During a nighttime test with a sudden pedestrian appearance, the Camry completely avoided a collision, while the Altima only reduced speed before impact.
The study authors attribute the result to the age of the models. The current generation Altima has been produced since 2018, while the new Camry XV80 was released in 2025. During this time, safety requirements have become significantly stricter, and the more modern Toyota was able to better prepare for the new tests.
Earlier, the new Toyota Land Cruiser 2026 failed one of the key IIHS crash tests. Also, Kursiv Avto reported that Toyota patented a technology for simulating a manual transmission for electric vehicles.
