The creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States helped prevent a mass conflict in the post-Soviet space. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

This was stated by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at a meeting of the Council of CIS Heads of State held in Turkmenistan.

Almaty Declaration — a turning point

The head of state noted that the CIS is marking 35 years since its founding and called the Almaty Declaration signed in 1991 a turning point in the history of the states.

"The creation of the CIS prevented a mass conflict in the post-Soviet space. At a difficult moment when the countries within the Union were parting ways, we preserved our historical ties and built a completely new format of interstate interaction," Tokayev said.

Global challenges

According to the president, in the current system of international relations global economic ties are weakening, technological competition is intensifying and uncertainty is growing. In such conditions, reliable dialogue and common decisions that take into account the interests of states are needed.

Tokayev noted that the main value of the CIS is friendship between peoples, shared culture and spiritual heritage.

International conference in Almaty

The head of state also announced that an international conference dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the Almaty Declaration will be held in Almaty in November. He called on scholars, legal experts, historians and experts from CIS countries to take an active part in the conference.

CIS countries adopted a statement dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Commonwealth.
