President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has sent a congratulatory telegram to prominent businessman and well-known philanthropist Timur Turlov, who has taken the helm of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The head of state wished the CEO of Freedom Holding Corp. success in his new post, according to Akorda.
Turlov's election as FIDE President
Timur Turlov heads the Kazakhstan Chess Federation. On September 26, at elections held in Samarkand as part of the organization's General Assembly, he won in the second round, receiving 110 votes out of 196 possible. Turlov replaced Arkady Dvorkovich, who had led FIDE since 2018.
"This is a great responsibility and a vote for the better future of our sport," Turlov said after the results were announced.
Pre-election pledges
Earlier, during the pre-election debates for the post of FIDE President, Timur Turlov presented plans to create a special fund and invest more than $6 million in the development of chess, including support for small federations around the world.
Congratulations from a Kazakh minister
Kazakhstan's Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek also congratulated Turlov on his election. In a letter on his own behalf and on behalf of the ministry's staff, he wished the new head of FIDE success in his work, health and well-being for his family.
