Railway freight transport between Kazakhstan and Tajikistan grew by 15% over the year, while road transport increased by 8%. According to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, growth continued in 2026. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

A working group of the two countries will now prepare proposals for joint transport projects. Tokayev announced this at a briefing following talks with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Astana, according to Akorda.

In 2025, about 7 million tonnes of cargo were transported between Kazakhstan and Tajikistan by road and rail. According to Tokayev, the growth this year was supported by the conditions both countries created for carriers.

"An agreement has been reached to pay special attention to the digitalization of transport, which will ensure seamless movement of goods," Tokayev said.

The parties will study the prospects for new transport and logistics projects. Proposals will be prepared by a working group that includes representatives of the national railway companies of the two countries.

Kazakhstan and Tajikistan agreed to continue cooperation on the use of water from transboundary rivers. The countries intend to introduce digital solutions in water management and jointly develop systems for accounting and monitoring of water resources.

Tokayev also said that Kazakhstan has transferred the digital solutions of its e-government to Tajikistan, and Tajik specialists have completed internships at Kazakh IT schools. A joint faculty of information technology, created with the participation of L. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, operates at the Tajik Technical University named after M. Osimi.

In addition, Kazakhstan proposed developing and adopting a comprehensive cooperation plan with Tajikistan until 2030.

Earlier, Kursiv reported that the countries adopted a roadmap to increase trade turnover until 2030. It was among 14 documents exchanged by the delegations following the talks. They also include a framework agreement on the supply of petroleum products and a memorandum on cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence.
