Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev sent a telegram of condolences to Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif after a school roof collapsed in Peshawar. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to Akorda, the tragedy killed 34 children and a teacher.
“The head of state expressed solidarity with the people of Pakistan and wished all the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement said.
The roof of the private Al-Khair school collapsed on the morning of October 15 while children were in class. According to Associated Press, at least 35 people died and more than 50 were injured. Most of the dead and injured children were between six and 12 years old. About 100 emergency service workers took part in the rescue operation, assisted by parents.
According to Reuters, by October 16 most of the injured children had been discharged after receiving first aid. Three remained in critical condition.
According to the Peshawar police chief, the building's weak structures could not withstand the additional load from construction work on the roof. The school owner was detained. The authorities launched an investigation and announced checks of other similar school buildings.
