President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has announced that elections to maslikhats will be held in the near future. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to the president, the powers of maslikhat deputies are retained until the term determined by the Constitution and relevant laws. "However, most of them were elected from the Amanat party. Today this political organization has merged with the Adilet party and ceased its activities. Soon the relevant legislative procedures will be completed. At that point, a question will arise regarding the legality of the activities of the majority of maslikhat deputies," Tokayev said at the first session of the National Kurultai.
In the near future, the president will consult with the prime minister and the chairman of the Kurultai on the early termination of the powers of maslikhats at all levels. "After that, I will sign the corresponding Decree. Soon the Central Election Commission must announce the date of the elections. This step will pave the way for forming a qualified and professional corps of maslikhats and give a new impetus to its work," the president concluded.
