Kazakhstan will expand its ability to trace and seize property illegally moved to European countries. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the corresponding law. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

"The Head of State signed the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan 'On Ratification of the European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters'," the Akorda statement says.

What the document regulates

The document regulates cooperation between countries in collecting evidence, questioning witnesses and other actions necessary for investigating crimes.

Earlier, Kursiv wrote that on September 23 the Kurultai approved the law on ratification of the convention. Joining it will allow Kazakhstan to receive evidence in criminal cases from other countries, search for and seize property, and also return assets illegally moved abroad.

The path to joining the convention

Kazakhstan had sought to join the convention since 2001. In June 2025, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe officially invited the republic to become a party to it. The convention will enter into force for Kazakhstan 90 days after the instrument of accession is transmitted to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
