Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed two laws on the establishment of a UN regional center for sustainable development goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The head of state signed the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Nations on the Establishment in the Republic of Kazakhstan of the United Nations Regional Center for Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan," as well as the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Ratification of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Nations regarding the United Nations Regional Center for Goals in the Field of Sustainable Development for Central Asia and Afghanistan."
According to the president, the center in Almaty reflects the growing strategic importance of the region. "We strive to unlock the potential of Central Asia as an active mediator in solving key international issues and consistently promote a constructive and future-oriented agenda on the global stage. In this regard, the creation of a UN regional center in Almaty is a timely and strategically important step," he said during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in August 2025.
