Hollywood star Tom Cruise will return to the role of NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in the sequel to the 1990 film 'Days of Thunder'. The film is scheduled for release on June 2, 2028, with Anne Hathaway joining Cruise on screen. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Cruise announced the sequel directly at Daytona International Speedway in Florida, ahead of the final race of the NASCAR regular season. The actor addressed the drivers and said the new film would not only be about speed and competition, but also about the culture of NASCAR itself — the teams, fans, and people who live for racing.
In the new film, Cruise will not only star but also produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Jonathan Levine will direct, with a script by Will Staples.
Anne Hathaway will play the owner and engineer of a racing team. Plot details have not yet been revealed.
The original 'Days of Thunder' was released in 1990. The film followed a young driver, Cole Trickle, as he breaks into NASCAR. Despite lukewarm reviews from critics, the film has since become a cult favorite among motorsport fans.
Cruise is no stranger to dangerous stunts. During the making of the first film, he performed some of the stunts himself. At the Daytona meeting, the actor recalled how one shoot at around 290 km/h ended with his car catching fire on the track. The sequel to 'Days of Thunder' is scheduled for release on June 2, 2028.
