Minister of Emergency Situations Murat Mukhanov continues to visit mines where tragedies have previously occurred. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
In the Ulytau region, the head of the Emergency Ministry descended more than 600 meters underground at the Zhomart mine, where seven workers died in February 2025.
Together with regional akim Yeset Baiken and chairman of the board of Kazakhmys Corporation LLP Ruslan Oskenali, the minister reviewed how industrial safety is organized.
According to the Emergency Ministry's press service, special attention was paid to monitoring the gas situation in underground workings. Mukhanov was shown the operation of stationary instruments and portable gas analyzers.
The minister also inspected ventilation and dispatch control systems.
Separately, meeting participants decided to strengthen seismological monitoring in the Ulytau region, including in areas where deposits are located. The system is planned to be integrated into the seismological network of the NNCSNI. The possibility of creating a detailed seismic zoning map of the region will also be considered.
The Zhomart mine has been operating since 2006. Copper ore is extracted here by underground method, with an annual volume of about 4.1 million tons.
On February 17, 2025, an explosion and rock collapse occurred at the mine owned by Kazakhmys Corporation. Seven workers were trapped under the rubble. Due to cable damage, there was no communication with them. As a result of the accident, all seven miners died.
On March 21, 2025, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov announced that the commission found Kazakhmys guilty of the accident at the Zhomart mine.
The mine resumed operations in June 2025.
The day before, Murat Mukhanov visited the notorious Kostenko mine in the Karaganda region. In October 2023, the largest accident in Kazakhstan's coal industry in recent years occurred there, killing 46 workers.
The minister descended almost 700 meters underground and personally inspected how safety is organized at such a depth.
