The Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development explained why a fourth mobile operator is not being created. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to Damir Seisembekov, chairman of the Telecommunications Committee, when Tele2 was sold to a strategic investor, a specific requirement was included in the contract.
"In accordance with it, we cannot issue a 5G license until the end of this year. New mobile operators also cannot be created. For now, this issue is not being discussed. Therefore, it would be wrong to say whether it will happen right now or not," Seisembekov said at a briefing in the government.
According to him, the plans have not changed. The ministry is studying international experience. Today, many countries have two, at most four, mobile operators.
"If a fourth mobile operator is created, infrastructure and services should improve, and tariffs should decrease. But if none of this happens, what is the point of creating a fourth operator? That is why today we are conducting an analysis. But we are not drawing up any plans," the committee head said.
