Timofey Skatov defeated Thailand's Maximus Jones 6:4, 4:6, 6:4 in the decisive match of the Davis Cup tie in Astana. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

Day one: Kazakhstan wins both singles matches

After the first day of the Kazakhstan – Thailand tie, nothing suggested difficulties for the hosts. The Kazakh players won both singles matches. Alexander Shevchenko beat Jones 6:4, 1:6, 7:5, while Skatov got the better of Kasidit Samrej 6:4, 7:6 (7:4).

Day two: Thailand pulls level

The second day of play on the court in Astana began with the pair of Beibit Zhukayev and Denis Yevseyev losing 4:6, 6:3, 5:7 to Pruchya Isaro and the same Jones. After that, Shevchenko failed to handle Samrej, losing 6:1, 2:6, 3:6.

The score was level, and the winner was to be decided in the fifth match. After a short rest, Jones came out to face Timofey. He immediately gave up his serve. Skatov did not allow him to break back – 6:4.

Second set: Jones converts his first set point

In the second set, the opponents confidently held their serves. The play was heading toward a tie-break, but in the 10th game the Kazakh player, leading 30:0, made several errors and lost the set on the very first set point – 4:6.

Thus, the fate of the incredibly stubborn Kazakhstan – Thailand tie was decided in the third set of the final fifth match. Having taken Jones's serve with great difficulty in the fifth game, Skatov confirmed the break just as hard – 4:2. After that, he did not let his opponent back into the match and finished the drawn-out contest with the score 6:4, 4:6, 6:4.

An end to a run of three defeats

By winning 3:2, the Kazakhstan national team ended an unpleasant run of three straight defeats. In February 2024, the team lost to Argentina (2:3), and in September 2025 to South Korea (1:3). In February of this year, the team led by Alexander Bublik lost at home in Astana to Monaco – 1:3.

As a result, before the game against Thailand, the team was in World Group II, the third division of the Davis Cup. From there it will try to move up to the "second league" next year.
