The start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union does not mean they will necessarily be completed. This was stated by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, as reported by RIA Novosti. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to the results of a recent sociological survey conducted by the IBRiS laboratory, about 60% of Polish residents oppose Ukraine's entry into the European Union.
"One thing should be kept in mind: the start of negotiations does not mean they will be completed," Sikorski said on TVN television.
He noted that the negotiation chapters "will be very complex" and that "mutually beneficial solutions need to be developed."
Furthermore, he reminded that Poland has the right to veto on Ukraine's EU accession.
"Poland, as a member of the European Union and a state with veto power, is certainly in a privileged position on this issue," the Polish Foreign Minister said.
European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas admitted on February 15 that EU countries are not yet ready to give a specific date for Ukraine's admission to the Union.
Also, a number of European countries oppose Kyiv's accession to the EU.
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously stated that the situation around Ukraine began with the issue of its accession to the European Union, which led to a coup, events in Crimea, and military actions.
At the same time, he noted that Russia is not against Ukraine's membership in the European Union, but opposes the EU turning into a military bloc.
