Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in the United States on a three-day state visit. His plane landed on September 23 at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington. The Chinese leader and his wife Peng Liyuan were greeted at the aircraft steps by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
A red carpet about 30 meters long was laid out for the meeting. The leaders shook hands and spoke for several minutes. The national anthems of both countries were played and ceremonial cannon salutes were fired. The US president welcomed a foreign leader at Andrews Air Force Base for the first time in 11 years.
Even before the Trump-Xi talks, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced an agreement to extend the trade truce between Washington and Beijing until January 10, 2027. The previous deadline was due to expire on November 10. According to Bessent, this will give the sides additional time to discuss a broader economic agreement.
The so-called Busan agreement was reached after Trump and Xi met in South Korea in October 2025. It provides for measures to reduce trade tensions, including a suspension of some increased tariffs. Extending the truce by itself does not mean a new large-scale trade deal has been concluded.
The main talks between the leaders are scheduled for September 24. According to Reuters, the sides may discuss trade, rare earth minerals, artificial intelligence and Taiwan. Among possible outcomes, agency sources name a reduction of tariffs on certain goods and an expansion of dialogue between military departments.
According to the White House schedule, an official welcome ceremony and a state dinner will be held on September 24. Among the invited guests, according to Reuters, are heads of major technology companies, including Sam Altman, Jensen Huang and Tim Cook. A visit to the US National Archives is planned for September 25, after which the visit will end.
