Shymkent has seen a surge in snakes and scorpions appearing in residential areas. Due to the influx of dangerous animals, rescue services are operating in an enhanced mode. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to city services, over 130 calls related to snake sightings in residential areas have been received in the last two months. Rescuers have captured about 90 snakes. For comparison, about 200 such reports were registered throughout last year.
Experts note that reptiles are increasingly appearing on private property, in residential areas, city parks, and groves. The main reason for their emergence is the search for food.
"Snakes are most often found where there are mice and birds, as these are their prey. The city is home to many species of snakes, both venomous and non-venomous. If you find one, it is important not to approach it and wait for rescuers to arrive," said Yerbol Ospanov, head of the Shymkent Emergency Situations Department.
Despite the increase in reports, no snake bites have been recorded in the city so far.
However, scorpions pose another danger to residents. According to experts, 80 people have already been stung since the start of the season.
Rescuers urge residents to be cautious during walks and outdoor recreation, carefully inspect their yards, and not attempt to catch snakes or scorpions on their own.
