Two motoro stingray pups have been born for the first time in the aquarium department of Shymkent Zoo — a male and a female. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
About motoro stingrays
Motoro stingrays are freshwater inhabitants of South America that live in the basins of the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná rivers. Unlike most fish, they do not lay eggs: the female gives birth to already formed pups. Therefore, the appearance of the two pups became the first successful case of motoro reproduction at Shymkent Zoo.
Condition of the pups
Both pups are now active, feed on their own and are growing well. They are being monitored by staff of the aquarium department and veterinarians.
Safety warning
At the same time, the pups are not so harmless. Motoro stingrays have a sharp venomous spine on their tail that serves them for protection. It is regularly renewed: the old spine is shed and a new one grows in its place. A sting from such a spine can cause severe pain, swelling and tissue damage, and in severe cases poses a danger to life.
