Almaty authorities have reminded of ambitious plans to expand mountain tourism infrastructure. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to the Almaty Tourism Department, after the project is implemented, the capacity of Shymbulak will increase fivefold. Currently, the resort can accommodate about 6,000 visitors per day, but after expansion, this figure will reach 30,000.
Recall that the project envisions a unified system of mountain resorts Shymbulak and Oi-Qaragai, connected via the Medeu base station. Authorities plan to build 30 new cable cars, lay 151 km of ski slopes, and modernize existing infrastructure.
All updates are part of the Almaty Mountain Cluster development plan, which has been developed since 2025. More details about the project and its expected impact can be read here. In February of last year, it became known that 656 billion tenge would be allocated for the tourism project.
Earlier, Kursiv LifeStyle reported that in May 2026, construction began on the first of seven new cable cars at Shymbulak.
