Sweden will ban mobile phones in schools starting next academic year as part of a global trend away from digital devices. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
The Scandinavian country's center-right coalition government has since 2023 pursued a policy prioritizing more reading time and less screen time, particularly among preschool students, favoring books and other traditional learning tools.
Lawmaker Joar Forsell, chairperson of the Swedish parliament's education committee, said officials have seen a decline in the general ability to read and write in Sweden, especially among younger students. "We're rolling the screens back," Forsell said.
The decision marks a significant shift for a country long championed as a leader in adopting digital technology. The new rules will take effect at the start of the next academic year.
