Mass clashes between inmates have occurred at a prison in Sri Lanka. According to Reuters, at least 25 people were killed and about 100 others were injured. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The riots began on Sunday at the prison in Negombo, located about 35 kilometers north of the capital Colombo. According to sources in the police and hospital, the conflict erupted between convicted prisoners and those held in pre-trial detention.
Law enforcement officers are currently continuing to inspect the prison grounds and are clarifying the number of dead and injured.
"The military was asked to support the police, but at the moment they are on standby," Sri Lanka army spokesman Brigadier Waruna Gamage told Reuters.
Footage from local TV channel Derana TV showed reinforced police units at the prison entrance. Buses evacuating wounded inmates were also filmed, with some lying on the bus floor.
