Deadly clashes broke out at a prison in Negombo, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Sri Lanka's capital Colombo, leaving 25 people dead and more than 100 injured. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
The unrest began on Sunday and continued on Monday, according to local media and police. Local television station Hiru reported that 25 people have been killed, including prison officials. Police spokesman Chandana Herath confirmed the clash and fatalities but provided no further details. The cause of the clash was not immediately known.
An official at the area's main state-run hospital said more than 100 people have been admitted with injuries, speaking on condition of anonymity. Sri Lankan prisons are highly congested, with over 39,000 inmates crowded into a system with a total capacity of just 10,000.
