The death toll from a mass attempt to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has risen to 72. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Reuters.

According to rescuers and security forces, several more people have died, increasing the scale of the tragedy. Ceuta is an autonomous Spanish city in North Africa, bordering Morocco.

Most migrants attempted to cross by sea or by breaching border fences. During the incident, many drowned or died falling from the fences.

Authorities are investigating the causes of the disaster. The incident has again highlighted the issue of illegal migration to Europe.
