Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced his resignation on September 27 during an address to citizens. He also said he intends to participate in parliamentary elections. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
"I am grateful to the citizens who twice gave me their trust. Today is the day when I resign," Vucic said.
Vucic had held the presidency since 2017 — almost nine and a half years. He explained his decision to run in elections to the National Assembly, in particular, by the situation in the education system. Parliamentary elections in Serbia are scheduled for October 25.
After the early termination of the president's powers, his duties will temporarily pass to the speaker of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabic. The country must also hold early presidential elections.
Thus, a significant change is taking place in Serbia's political life: the head of state is voluntarily leaving office and seeking to participate in elections to the legislative body. This decision may affect the domestic political situation in the country and the course of the upcoming election campaign.
