Two meteor streams will light up the sky in September. These are the Aurigids at the junction of August and September, and the main astronomical events will be the September Epsilon Perseids with a peak on September 9–10 (up to 8 meteors per hour), reports Starwalk. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Aurigids (August 31 – September 1)
The Aurigids are active at the beginning of the month, but the bright moonlight in 2026 hinders viewing faint meteors.
September Epsilon Perseids (September 9–10)
The peak occurs near the new moon (moon illumination only 2%), creating ideal dark conditions for observation. Up to 8 fast meteors per hour are expected.
Daytime Sextantids (active from September 20)
A weak stream whose maximum shifts to early October, but the first meteors can be noticed in the early morning.
Observing tips
Go outside the city, away from bright lights and roads. Look at an open area of the sky in the direction of the constellation Perseus (for Epsilon Perseids).
Telescopes or binoculars are not needed — eyes adapt to darkness better on their own (about 20 minutes needed).
Next meteor showers
The next meteor showers worth paying attention to are the Draconids on October 9 (a modest shower that may unexpectedly show high activity), and the Orionids on October 21, capable of producing up to 20 meteors per hour.
Earlier, Kursiv wrote that Almaty residents had to watch the Perseids in traffic jams.
