Qurultay deputies adopted a law ratifying the European convention on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The convention is aimed at regulating relations between competent authorities on obtaining and providing legal assistance in criminal matters.
According to the deputies, joining the convention will allow Kazakhstan to obtain evidence in criminal cases handled by the country's law enforcement agencies and to return assets illegally obtained and taken abroad.
"This will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of investigating criminal cases, including those related to transnational crime," the deputies say.
Under the convention, its participants are obliged to provide each other with legal assistance in criminal matters on a mutual basis and subject to the requirements set out in it.
It is worth noting that the European convention on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters was drawn up on 20 April 1959 in Strasbourg.
