Mobile operators were held accountable for exceeding the permitted level of cellular signal near a prison in Kostanay, the Prosecutor General's Office reported. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

In the Kostanay region, measurements of cellular signal levels were carried out on the territory of institutions of the penal enforcement system.

"According to the measurement results, on the territory of three institutions of the penal enforcement system, facts of exceeding the permissible level of cellular signal by the mobile operators Kar-Tel LLP (Beeline), Kcell JSC and Mobile Telecom-Service LLP (ALTEL, Tele2) were identified," the statement says.

Based on the prosecutor's supervisory act, the authorized body brought the three operators to administrative liability and imposed fines.

According to Article 97 of the Penal Enforcement Code, mobile operators are obliged to ensure the optimization of their communication networks, including timely measures to reduce the level of radio signal propagation on the territory of penal institutions, prosecutors say.

Failure to comply with these requirements negatively affects the provision of regime requirements in penal institutions.

Previously, it was established that a convicted person serving a sentence in a penal institution, using a mobile phone, committed fraud worth more than 4 million tenge. During the investigation, mobile phones were confiscated from him, and the guilty person was brought to criminal liability.

It was also reported that in Petropavlovsk, a convicted person engaged in extortion while in prison.
