To preserve the flamingo habitat, 40 million cubic meters of water have been released into the Korgalzhyn Reserve. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The Tengiz-Korgalzhyn lake system is located on the territory of the Korgalzhyn Reserve and serves as a habitat for flamingos and other birds. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation annually conducts water releases for environmental purposes across Kazakhstan.
Billions of cubic meters of water are directed to preserve water bodies and support local ecosystems. According to the ministry, during water releases, specialists from the Republican State Enterprise "Kazsushar" organize round-the-clock duty at hydroelectric facilities and reservoirs, conduct constant monitoring, and ensure control over water passage.
It is worth recalling that last year, the Water Code, adopted to prevent the depletion of water bodies, introduced the concept of "ecological flow" for the first time. This is the minimum allowable level of water needed to preserve the ecosystems of rivers, lakes, and seas.
The document also expanded requirements for the protection of small rivers and lakes. Additionally, a special regime for the protection of wetlands and glaciers is provided.
