Kazakh athletes Kyrill Savchenko, Sofya Kidenko and Gleb Gladilov failed to get past the preliminary rounds at the U20 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, USA. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Savchenko finishes seventh in 400m hurdles
Kyrill Savchenko finished seventh, second to last, in the preliminary heat of the 400m hurdles. The 18-year-old Kazakh covered the distance in 53.88 seconds. Kyrill's personal best is 52.54. But even that would not have been enough to advance. The qualifying time in the heat was set by Barbados' Rashad Gibson – 51.74.
Kidenko sixth in 400m
Sofya Kidenko, 19, from East Kazakhstan region, finished sixth in the 400m with a time of 56.29. If she had run her personal best (54.75), she would have been fifth. To continue at the World Championships, she needed to finish in 54.31.
Gladilov jumps 14.75m in triple jump
Gleb Gladilov jumped 14.75 meters on his third attempt in the triple jump. To qualify for the final, he needed to jump 15.69. The 19-year-old from Shymkent has a personal best of 15.47.
Cherkashina advances to final
The day before, our pole vaulter Anna Cherkashina cleared a Kazakhstan-record height of 4.10m and advanced to the final. 13 athletes, including the Almaty native, will compete for medals in this event on August 8.
Kazakhstan team at U20 Worlds 2026
Kazakhstan is represented at the U20 World Championships 2026 in the USA by six male and five female athletes who met the qualification standards.
This is the largest team since the 2008 U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland (12 athletes). Two years ago, in Lima, Peru, there were five Kazakh athletes, and at the 2022 World Championships in Cali, Colombia – four.
Kazakhstan has competed as a separate team at U20 World Athletics Championships since 1994. Since then, our athletes have participated in 16 U20 World Championships, not missing a single one. However, they have not yet reached the podium.
