Kazakh producers reduced the import share for 83 of 183 goods produced in the country. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to the National Statistics Bureau, in January-August 2026 imports of these goods declined compared to the same period in 2023. At the same time, the import share increased for 51 goods, while 49 goods saw no significant changes.
Where the import share declined
The import share decreased significantly for ceramic tiles, televisions, copper wire and kitchen furniture. Conversely, dependence on imports increased for toilet paper, sugar, metal structures, chocolate and confectionery products.
The import substitution process is most visible in ceramic tile production. In the eight months of 2026, its import share fell from 78.7% to 48.6%. During this period, domestic producers manufactured 12 million square meters of tiles. This is 2.4 times more than in 2023. Import volume decreased from 18.1 million square meters to 11.3 million square meters. Thus, in 2026, domestic tile production exceeded import volume for the first time.
Also, the import share for kitchen furniture decreased from 33.9% to 23%, and for mattresses from 45% to 37.9%. The import share of copper wire also shrank from 16.9% to 3.8%.
Changes in the food industry
There are positive changes in the food industry as well. The import share for sausage products decreased from 40% to 33%. For cheese and cottage cheese, the indicator fell from 43.3% to 40.8%. However, the import share for juices and table salt did not change significantly.
Automobile and television production
Automobile production also grew. In January-August 2026, Kazakhstan produced 117.2 thousand passenger cars. This is 34.2% more than in the same period last year. As a result of the decline in import volume, the import share in the country's vehicle resources fell to 49.8%.
Television production grew 2.7 times over the year, reaching 146.7 thousand units. Despite this, the import share remains high at 83.9%. Washing machine production in 2026 reached 49.4 thousand units, accounting for 10.6% of commodity resources.
Goods with increased import dependence
At the same time, dependence on imports intensified for a number of goods. In particular, the import share of toilet paper rose from 41.9% to 61.5%. Its production decreased from 21 thousand tons to 17.6 thousand tons, while imports increased from 15.1 thousand tons to 28.2 thousand tons.
The import share of sugar also reached 77.7% from 61.2%. Domestic production decreased from 133.8 thousand tons to 81.4 thousand tons. For metal structures, the import share rose from 48.9% to 63.8%, and for chocolate and confectionery products from 52% to 61.1%.
