Alina Golovina, Antonina Chernyshova and Bogdan Goncharov failed to qualify for the semifinals of the hurdle sprint on the third day of the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
19-year-old Goncharov became the first Kazakhstani to run under 14 seconds in the 110m hurdles at the World U20 Championships. His time of 13.99 was not enough to advance to the next round. Bogdan finished sixth in his heat, missing the qualifying mark by 0.33 seconds.
Our women also failed to reach the semifinals in the 100m hurdles. 18-year-old Alina Golovina finished in 14.10. Her 19-year-old teammate Antonina Chernyshova from North Kazakhstan region fell during a hurdle and finished in 17.98. Their personal bests of 13.93 and 13.78 respectively would not have been enough to reach the second round, as the qualifying standard was 13.68.
Earlier, Kazakhstani athletes Kirill Savchenko (400m hurdles), Sofiya Kidenko (400m) and Gleb Gladilov (triple jump) failed to qualify at the World U20 Championships.
On the first day of the championships, Kazakhstani pole vaulter Anna Cherkashina cleared a Kazakhstan-record height of 4.10m to qualify for the final.
Kazakhstan's team at the 2026 World U20 Championships consists of six male and five female athletes who met the qualifying standards. This is the largest team since the 2008 World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland (12 athletes). Two years ago in Lima, Peru, there were five Kazakhstani athletes, and at the 2022 World Championships in Cali, Colombia, there were four.
Kazakhstan has competed as a separate team at the World U20 Championships since 1994. Since then, our athletes have participated in 16 World U20 Championships, not missing a single one. However, our young athletes have yet to reach the podium.
