A second foal of Przewalski's horse has been born in Kazakhstan. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, this time a mare named Umbra gave birth. The ministry said that Umbra and the foal are currently together, and specialists are monitoring their condition and behavior.
This is the second offspring born in Kazakhstan under the international program to return Przewalski's horse to its historical habitat. The first foal was born on August 22, 2026, at the Alibi wild ungulate reintroduction center in the Altyn Dala state nature reserve.
The birth of the second foal indicates that the horses brought to Kazakhstan are adapting to steppe conditions and reproducing naturally. This is important for establishing a sustainable population capable of self-reproduction in the wild.
The import of Przewalski's horses to Kazakhstan began in 2024. In the first year, seven horses were delivered from Europe. In 2025, another seven were brought, and in 2026, eight horses were imported.
