Kazakhstan has introduced a day dedicated to two national dog breeds. On September 3, the country celebrates the Day of the Kazakh Tazy and Tobet for the first time. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

The Tazy is traditionally considered one of the "Zheti Kazyna" — seven treasures of the Kazakh people. Along with the Tobet, these dogs have accompanied the inhabitants of the Great Steppe for centuries.

"The Tazy as a national dog breed is an integral part of the cultural heritage of our people and its traditional way of life, included in the seven treasures 'Zheti Kazyna', symbolizing loyalty, agility and strength. For centuries, the Tazy and Tobet were faithful companions of man in the Great Steppe and today continue to connect us with the history, traditions of our ancestors, with their reverent attitude to the nature of their native land," Smadiyarov wrote on his Telegram channel.

In recent years, the preservation of national breeds in Kazakhstan has been addressed at the state level. The country adopted a law on the preservation and reproduction of Kazakh dog breeds, and Kazakhstan became a full member of the International Cynological Federation.

In 2024, the Tazy received preliminary recognition at the international level. Kazakhstan was officially registered as the country of origin of the breed.

Currently, Kazakh Tazy dogs participate in major international exhibitions, the breeding base is being expanded, and the construction of the National Center for Kazakh Dog Breeds is being completed.

"Today our Tazy dogs perform worthily at the largest international exhibitions, the breeding base is expanding, more and more people are engaged in their breeding. The construction of the National Center for Kazakh Dog Breeds is being completed," said the presidential press secretary.

According to Smadiyarov, the work on preserving and internationally promoting the Tazy in recent years has been carried out on the instructions of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The establishment of a separate day for the Tazy and Tobet in Akorda is called another step in popularizing national dog breeds.

Earlier, Kursiv reported on how a true Kazakh Tazy is identified today.
