According to data from the Bureau of National Statistics, women's salaries in Kazakhstan are 28% lower than men's. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
In 2020, women's salaries were 25% lower than men's, and last year the gap widened to 28.2%. In all sectors of the economy except education, there was a significant wage gap between men and women.
In the financial and insurance sector, men earned 30.7% more than women; in real estate, 27.4% more. Women earned more in the education sector.
However, in higher education institutions with high salaries, men earned 15% more than women last year. Additionally, in several high-income or technology sectors, the gap was substantial: in publishing, women earned only 58.3% of men's salaries; in air passenger transport, 59.0%; in computer programming, 66.5%.
Regions with the largest wage gaps were Mangystau (47.5%) and Atyrau (57.9%) regions. In Zhetysu (92.5%), North Kazakhstan (85.5%), and Zhambyl (85.1%) regions, the ratio was much closer to parity.
In major cities — Almaty, Astana, and Shymkent — the figure ranged from 75% to 82%. Last year, male managers and civil servants earned 30% more than women in the same positions.
